Frequently Asked Questions

What is hydroseeding?

Hydroseeding is a planting process that uses a mixture of seed, fertilizer, fiber matrix and water. It requires special equipment for application. It is often used as a cost effective erosion control technique on construction sites and an alternative to traditional broadcasting of dry seeds.

What are the benefits of hydroseeding?

Hydroseeding can distribute the seeds over a very large area in a short amount of time. The cost of hydroseeding compared to the installation of sod is significantly more cost effective. The results from hydroseeding appear quicker than traditional broadcasting due to the optimal inputs being applied at one time. Grass growth usually appears in 7-10 days and reaches healthy mowing height around one month.

Comparison of Hydroseeding to Sod.

Hydroseed

  • Lower cost

  • Grass germinates in approximately 7-10 days

  • Planting season from March to October (winter applications can vary)

  • Mixture can be specifically tailored to soil and grass conditions

Sod

  • Higher cost

  • Instant lawn and erosion protection

  • Can be installed at any time

  • Requires more care to maintain and control seams

Why complete soil test?

Soil testing has many benefits. It provides valuable information required in creating the soil preparation plan to maximize the success rate in grass growth. Information regarding fertilizer needed, current pH level, nitrogen levels, water retention and bacteria levels are needed prior to seed application to ensure the correct hydroseeding mixture is applied. The testing process saves time and money in the overall grassing project.
